Nordland National Park Visitor Centre is beside the main E6 highway at Storjord in Saltdal, strategically located midway between the Saltfjellet - Svartisen and Junkerdal national parks.

This is a perfect starting point for trips in these parks. The exhibition at the Centre also provides information on the other national parks in the county of Nordland and their beautiful and rich natural history.

The Centre opened on 2 July 2005.

Purpose
The Nordland National Park Visitor Centre aims to gather and pass on information on the national parks and other protected areas, scenery and Norwegian and Sámi cultural heritage of Nordland. The activity as a whole is intended to display the natural assets of Nordland and encourage active outdoor recreation.

Services and facilities
The Centre is authorised as the visitor centre for the Junkerdal and Saltfjellet – Svartisen national parks, but also provides information on the other national parks in Nordland: Børgefjell, Møysalen and Rago. It has exhibitions dealing with the natural history and scenery of Nordland:

  • Geology and landscape
  • Plants and animals
  • Settlement, industry and outdoor recreation
  • Nature conservation and management

and also

  • An auditorium
  • A library and study room
  • Suitable facilities for courses and conferences
  • Works of art
  • Attractive grounds

The main building encircles a courtyard that is equipped with a hearth and benches as well as various installations for active learning in subjects covered by the Centre. Roparneset, an outdoor recreation area close to the Centre, is also actively used to convey information. A Sámi settlement has been reconstructed here to show how the Sámi once used areas that are now in national parks. Storjordstua, representing the varied use put to outlying land by Norwegians over a great many years, also stands here. It is now used as overnight accommodation managed by the Bodø branch of the Norwegian Trekking Association.
