One of the largest, unbroken areas of wilderness in southern Norway is found in this district, and a large part of it is protected in the Lierne and Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella national parks. The Lierne National Park Visitor Centre serves both parks.

The Centre is in a multi-purpose extension of the municipal offices in Nordli, which also houses the public library, the municipal cultural affairs office and other bodies concerned with outlying land, land-use management and business development. The exhibition is in another, round annex, and was opened on 25 May 2007. It is divided into three parts:

• Management from a historical perspective, with special emphasis on the importance of outlying land for people living in the district.
• What is management? The two national parks form the basis for answering the question.
• The four large carnivores living in Norway, focusing mainly on the brown bear.
• The exhibition is built up around the theme of ”- to live off Nature – to live with large carnivores”. It aims to give visitors an insight into the meaning of nature for people living in the region and to show that its management concerns everyone, even though views differ and there are different means of achieving it.
