Hardangervidda nasjonalparksenter

The Hardangervidda National Park Visitor Centre is on Møsvatn, a large lake in Tinn, at the eastern threshold of the upland plateau of Hardangervidda.

The Centre, designed by Gudmundur Jonsson, a Norwegian-Icelandic architect, received authorisation from the Directorate for Nature Management and opened in August 2000.

The Centre has been closed for a while, but is now open for visiting groups, school classes and special events. It will become part of the southern branch of the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre, which now shares facilities in the same building. Films and an entirely new exhibition on wild reindeer will be provided. Information on national parks in general will be another important topic at the centre. Read more about these plans at Norsk Villreinsenter.

The aims of the Hardangervidda National Park Visitor Centre in 2000

  • improve public understanding of interaction in ecology and provide information on human impact on the environment
  • further appreciation for the protection of vulnerable habitats and species
  • provide information on distinctive aspects of the natural environment
  • safeguard local cultural landscapes and cultural heritage sites in the park, and local cultural and craft traditions
  • stimulate interest for natural history and scenery, and encourage their enjoyment
  • help to channel travel in the park and encourage simple forms of outdoor recreation
  • provide information on the objectives of national environmental policies
  • improve public understanding of what national parks mean for society
  • help to achieve a good dialogue and mutual understanding between local people and management authorities
  • help to stimulate culture and identity linked with local knowledge of ecology and traditional use of the environment in the park
