Norsk Fjellmuseum

The Norwegian Mountain Museum is the Jotunheimen National Park Visitor Centre. It is situated in the centre of Lom, at one of the important gateways to the Jotunheimen.


The museum wants to demonstrate how the interplay between mankind and Nature has evolved from when mountainous areas were the domain of hunters to present-day mass tourism, outdoor recreation and extensive use of resources.

The Museum opened in 1994 and was authorised as a national park visitor centre in 1997.

Purpose
The Norwegian Mountain Museum aims to

  • promote the protection of the cultural heritage and natural history of mountainous areas bycollecting information, documenting, performing research, disseminating and informing people
  • be an information centre for national parks and other facilities and collections associated with life in the mountains
  • provide thrills, education and general cultural activities, mainly focused on interplay in Nature and between mankind and Nature

Services and facilities
Museum offers:

  • permanent exhibitions concerned with the ”Jotunheimen”, ”Norwegian Mountains” and ”Mammoths”
  • two slide shows, ”Water from the mountains to the fjord” and ”The four seasons in the mountains”; two films, ”A mountain wonderland” and ”Climbing Store Skagastølstind in 1919”
  • multimedia programme, ”Mogop”, dealing with Norwegian national parks, Norwegian rivers and hiking in the Jotunheimen
  • exhibition of hunting weapons and reindeer antlers
  • temporary summer exhibitions
  • children’s corner and treasure cave
  • museum shop
  • tourist information

Organisation
The Norwegian Mountain Museum is a Foundation set up by Lom Borough Council, Statskog Øst-Norge, the Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature, the Norwegian Trekking Association, the Norwegian Alpine Club, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, Lillehammer University College, the University of Bergen, the Norwegian Association of Committees Managing Mountain Resources, the Norwegian Association of Hunters and Anglers, the Federation of Norwegian Agricultural Co-operatives, the Federation for Norwegian Commons and the Norwegian Botanical Association.
